Back Forty Trivia

We Made You a Little Game: Introducing Back Forty Trivia

Some knowledge you only pick up by actually living somewhere. Not the kind you find on the first page of a search, but the kind a neighbour tells you over a fence, or you overhear at the general store, or you just absorb after enough seasons of driving these same roads. Which farm has the best rhubarb. Why that one stretch of highway floods every spring. What used to be on that empty lot before it was empty.

We started thinking about all the little pieces of Headwaters knowledge we’ve collected over the years — some of it useful, some of it just plain delightful — and we couldn’t shake the feeling that it deserved somewhere to live besides our own heads. So we made a game out of it.

Mums are out for September

Back Forty Trivia tests local knowledge of the Headwaters

Welcome to Back Forty Trivia

If you grew up anywhere near a farm, you already know what “the back forty” means — it’s the part of the property you don’t see from the road, the quiet acreage tucked behind the barn where the real character of a place tends to live. That felt like exactly the right name for this.

Starting tomorrow, and every Wednesday after that clear through to Christmas, we’ll be posting a trivia clue on Instagram — one fact about this beautiful stretch of Ontario we get to call home, phrased the old-fashioned Jeopardy way: the clue comes first, and you have to guess it in the form of a question.

Some weeks it’ll be a little bit of local history. Some weeks it’s a piece of land science we think everyone who lives here deserves to understand a little better. And a few weeks — like the one landing right around Canadian Thanksgiving — we’re going to dig up something so specifically, unmistakably local that if you know the answer without looking it up, you’ve earned yourself some serious Headwaters credibility.

How to Play

It’s simple, and we mean that in the nicest way — no app to download, no account to make.

  1. We post the clue on Wednesday morning. Read it. Sit with it a minute. Resist the urge to Google.
  2. You guess in the comments, in the form of a question, just like the real thing. (“What is…?”)
  3. We reveal the answer the next day, pinned right at the top of the comments, along with a little more of the story behind it.

That’s the whole game. No pressure, no scorekeeping, just a nice excuse to slow down for thirty seconds midweek and think about a place we all clearly love enough to want to know better.

Why We’re Doing This

Honestly? Because we think this region deserves better than being reduced to a postcard. The Headwaters isn’t just pretty — it’s the actual source of four rivers. It grows some of the best potatoes in the province on soil that drains like nowhere else in Ontario. It’s home to barns worth saving, wetlands worth protecting, and at least one farm still growing rhubarb the old-fashioned way, in the dark, exactly like it’s been done for generations.

We think knowing those things makes you see this place differently — whether you’ve lived here your whole life, you’re weighing a move up from the city, or you’re just someone who loves a good Wednesday distraction.

So pull up a chair. First clue drops tomorrow. We can’t wait to see what you already know — and what you’re about to.

Follow along every Wednesday on Instagram for a new Back Forty Trivia clue, with the answer revealed the very next day. And if any of these little stories make you fall even more in love with the Headwaters, you know where to find us: suzannelawrence.ca
