WINTER WONDERLAND: Five ways to enjoy the snow in Dufferin County

From local skiing, ice-fishing, snowshoeing and more, Dufferin is certainly a winter playground

1) Cross Country skiing at Mono Nordic

Just minutes outside of Orangeville are cross-country skiing trails just waiting for skiers.

With recent snowfall, the trails are crisp and ready. Mono Nordic is accessible dawn to dusk and there’s even two kilometres of lit trails for night skiing.

2) Ice fishing at Island Lake

Get a hut, a rod and some bait and head out onto the ice. Island Lake Conservation Area offers bait, rod rentals, ice drilling and more to make the experience of catching a chilly fish just a little easier.

3) Skating

Island Lake Conservation area has over one kilometre of cleared ice for skating. Check out local rinks at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre and Alder Street Recreation Centre too.

The Alton Mills also has an outdoor rink available on the mill pond.

4) Snowshoeing

Snowshoes are the perfect way to get out and enjoy nature after a heavy snowfall. Check out some of Dufferin’s most scenic trails, including Mono Cliffs Provincial Park and even the Dufferin County Forest.

Island Lake Conservation Area and Hockley Valley resort offer snowshoe rentals.

5) Snowmobiling

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs has a trail network that spans from north of Sarnia all the way to Kenora. The Orangeville Snowmobile Club is the local chapter, which provide local support and guidance for snowmobilers on the trails of the Dufferin tract.
